Care & Maintenance

Proper maintenance of your wooden wick candle is key to ensuring a clean, long-lasting burn and enjoying its signature gentle crackle. Here's a brief guide to help you get the most out of your candle.

The Crucial First Burn

The initial burn is the most important. To prevent "tunneling"—where the wax melts down the center, leaving a ring of hard wax around the outside—you must allow the wax to melt across the entire surface of the candle, reaching the edges of the container. This creates a "memory" for the wax and ensures an even burn for the life of the candle. This process can take 2-4 hours, so be sure to light your candle for the first time when you have adequate time to let it burn.

Proper Lighting Technique

For the best results, tilt the candle at a slight angle and light the wick from the base where it meets the wax. Hold the flame to the wick for a few seconds to allow the wood to catch. A long-handled lighter is recommended for ease and safety.

The Golden Rule: Trim Your Wick

Before each and every use, it is essential to trim your wooden wick. The ideal height for a wooden wick is approximately 1/8 of an inch. You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or even your fingers to gently break off the charred, brittle top portion of the wick. A properly trimmed wick will result in a steady, appropriately sized flame and will prevent issues like excessive smoke or soot.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • The flame is weak or extinguishes itself: This is most often caused by a wick that is too long. The wax is the fuel for the flame, and if the wick is too high, the wax can't travel up to feed the flame. Trim the wick to the recommended 1/8 inch.

  • The candle is smoking, or the flame is too high: This is another indication that your wick is too long. Extinguish the flame, allow the candle to cool completely, and then trim the wick.

  • Soot marks on the container: This is typically a result of a wick that is too long or the candle being in a drafty area. Always trim your wick and keep your burning candle away from open windows, fans, or high-traffic areas.

By following these simple maintenance tips, you can ensure a beautiful and enjoyable experience with your wooden wick candle from the first light to the last.
